Playlists Inspired By Our Favorite Reads - Dispatch #5
As Autumn descends upon us and dresses us all in gorgeous orange and yellow hues, and my very dear moody, rainy days lie ahead, I'm sharing a few of my favorite fall playlists based on the popular Spiral reads you enjoy!
for fans of The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo, a magical realism retelling of The Great Gatsby narrated by Jordan Baker:
while not a "period accurate" playlist, this is one of my favorites for those moody autumn evenings that also feel a bit wild and charged with something you don't quite understand. a mix of classic cabaret style and electro-swing!
for fans of Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, a lesbian necromantic cosmic horror space opera:
h a r r o w h a r k
you're not required to have read The Locked Tomb series to enjoy this playlist, of course. find a selection here of (mostly) semi-modern instrumental songs of the dark and gothic, haunted ancient crypt persuasion.
for fans of reads featuring liminal spaces like Piranesi by Susanna Clarke:
the music playing softly through the speakers of a defunct mall
"outside, it's grey and drizzling, and the air is on the cusp of autumn. you have the vague sense you're being watched, but every time you turn around, it's merely a clothing fixture, a vending machine, a nothingness. you wander, content and yet unsettled."
for fans of classic gothic heroine literature like Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson, a collection of her most haunting short stories:
what goes on in the twisted, tortuous minds of women would baffle anyone & i delight in what i fear
twin playlists haunted by a mix of classic songs and new tracks that evoke the slightly unhinged feminine chaos that reigns in Shirley Jackson's and Daphne Du Maurier's gothic novels.
& now it knows my name
more (mostly) instrumental erring on the side of moody and gothic, with a more classical sense of inspiration and a nod towards the surrounding haunted landscape.
for fans of Dark Night Golden Dawn by Allison Carr Waechter, and especially for fans of The Monas, the magical archive/library/bookstore/esoteric haven with immaculately tasteful decor:
"a world of esoteric knowledge, a legacy of books" perfectly describes this classical-inspired instrumental playlist, apt for curling into your own books in a vaguely haunted, vast, and ancient gothic library.
and the bonus, one-size-fits-all of (mostly) rock/alt rock songs that remind me of Halloween without truly being (mostly) Halloween songs:
Happy listening, and happy reading!
