Read That Already? Read This Next! - Dispatch #4.5

The literary world is full of repeated recommendations, popular books you're sick of hearing about, the newest releases you've already read, old classics you don't want to revisit. In a valiant effort to reconcile these occurrences, I invite you to join me for our next glorious installment of: "Read that already? Read this next!"

Mexican Gothic (Paperback $17) by Silvia Moreno-Garcia --> What Moves the Dead (Hardcover $19.99) by T. Kingfisher

A gripping and atmospheric retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's classic, The Fall of the House of Usher with all of the sentient mycology horror that Mexican Gothic gave us. After receiving word that their childhood friend is dying, a retired soldier, (a non-binary protagonist!), a redoubtable British mycologist, and a baffled American doctor team up to unravel the secrets of the house of Usher before it consumes them all. A quick read, but deeply haunting and extremely visceral.

Better yet: enjoy this read with an ambient playlist crafted by yours truly.

Today's installment is very short, as I hope you will invoke the remainder of your afternoon for the summoning of such strangeness as What Moves the Dead, with this uncanny, curated playlist at your side. Happy reading, and happy listening!
